Getting Recommended by AI Is Not a One-Time Website Project

AI recommendations are earned continuously, not permanently.

A lot of firms are beginning to ask the wrong question.

“How do I optimize my website for ChatGPT?”

It’s understandable. For years, search engine optimization conditioned us to think in terms of rankings. Build the page, optimize the keywords, earn some backlinks, and hopefully move toward the top of Google.

But generative AI doesn’t work that way.

One week your firm may be recommended by ChatGPT for a particular tax planning question. A month later, the exact same prompt may produce a different set of sources, different firms, and different recommendations.

That doesn’t mean AI is broken.

It means AI is continuously evaluating the best available evidence.

Research is already showing this behavior.

Neil Patel recently shared research tracking the same prompts over an eight-week period. The study found that the sources ChatGPT cited changed regularly over time. Reddit, Wikipedia, industry blogs, YouTube, and business publications all fluctuated from week to week instead of remaining static.

The conclusion wasn’t that GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) doesn’t work.

It was the opposite.

AI visibility is dynamic. Just like traditional SEO, it requires ongoing investment instead of a one-time project.

Neil’s recommendation was to diversify your digital footprint rather than relying on a single website or marketing channel. In other words, you need to build a brand across the web rather than relying on one or two platforms; a website alone certainly does not make a brand in this day and age.

Other researchers studying AI search have reached similar conclusions. Large language models increasingly evaluate information across multiple trusted sources, favor current information, and continually reassess which content best answers a user’s question. Authority is accumulated across your entire digital presence, not just your homepage.

This changes how tax and accounting firms should think about marketing.

For years, firms have treated their websites like digital brochures.

Build it.

Launch it.

Update it every few years.

That approach is becoming increasingly risky.

Today’s AI assistants evaluate far more than your homepage. They look for signals that your firm is active, knowledgeable, trusted, and consistently demonstrating expertise across multiple platforms and profiles, including your website’s blog, Facebook, LinkedIn, your Google Business Profile, Instagram, Reddit, and more

It also includes:

  • Educational articles
  • Frequently asked questions
  • Service pages
  • Client reviews
  • Professional profiles
  • Industry citations
  • Local business information
  • Third-party validation
  • Fresh content that demonstrates current expertise

Each piece contributes another layer of evidence that your firm deserves to be recommended.

The firms that disappear usually stop publishing.

Many firms assume that if they were recommended once, they’ll continue to be recommended indefinitely.

That’s unlikely.

Tax law changes.

Economic conditions change.

Client questions change.

AI models continue learning.

New competitors publish better content.

Reviews accumulate.

Professional credentials evolve.

Every one of these changes influences the evidence AI systems evaluate when deciding which firms to recommend.

Think of AI visibility less like earning a trophy and more like maintaining professional credibility.

You don’t earn trust once.

You continually reinforce it.

This is why consistency matters more than perfection.

Many firms delay publishing because they believe every article has to be perfect.

Meanwhile, competitors continue answering client questions every week.

Over time, those consistent signals accumulate.

A library of helpful articles.

Current tax updates.

Frequently asked questions.

Educational videos.

Positive client reviews.

Updated service pages.

Together they tell AI systems something important:

“This firm is actively serving clients and continually demonstrating expertise.”

That’s exactly the type of evidence AI systems are designed to reward. In the modern world of search, you aren’t always posting or blogging for readership. You’re creating content to send signals to AI search systems that you are, in fact, the authority in your chosen tax and accounting niche.

Your website is no longer the destination.

It’s the foundation.

Your digital footprint has become your firm’s body of evidence.

Every review…

Every article…

Every FAQ…

Every educational resource…

Every authoritative mention…

adds another reason for AI to trust your firm.

And trust is ultimately what drives recommendations.

The future belongs to firms that continuously build authority.

Generative Engine Optimization isn’t about gaming algorithms.

It’s about consistently demonstrating expertise wherever prospective clients and AI systems are looking.

The firms that treat AI visibility as an ongoing business process instead of a one-time website project will continue strengthening their digital authority while others slowly fade from view.

The question is no longer:

“Is my website optimized for AI?”

The better question is:

“What evidence am I giving AI today that my firm deserves to be recommended tomorrow?”

For small- and medium-sized accounting firms, perhaps the best news here is that AI systems like Gemini and ChatGPT don’t necessarily care if you’re winning a search popularity contest (this is notably different from Google’s old SEO algorithms). They care about the level of niche and local authority and expertise you actually have online. There’s a huge opportunity for smaller firms to begin outranking national brands in their local areas.
