Choosing a domain name is an integral part of establishing an online practice. One common question we hear often: Should I change my domain name? For tax and accounting professionals, most competitors do not have robust online strategies, and they are easy to compete with. But when it comes to just starting out or questions on why others rank better than you, it is website longevity, not domain name age, that is the biggest part of the equation.Very new websites, those that are younger than six months, may have trouble ranking in the beginning. Building an organic digital presence is a long game, because over time, your site builds trust with the search engines and you attract inbound links. The age of a site tends to correlate with more inbound links. Please note, Google may use your domain history or age to help fight webspam. But according to Google's own John Mueller, "No, domain age helps nothing." When choosing a domain name, one must consider using a keyword-rich URL. A well-crafted URL provides users and search engines alike a good idea of what the page it links to is all about. Even though you may think it's an abstract concept, your website address is significant. It conveys a lot of information at first glance, and a great one can help increase your business's visibility on search engines and make it easier for your customers to find you. Having keywords (e.g. "CPA") in your domain name is a minor ranking factor and will improve your site's search visibility. So, a web address like www.newportbeachcpa.com/best-cpa-in-newport-beach is loaded with organic keywords, while www.leereams.com/blog/post?id1234 is not.Keep the above in mind when debating a domain name change or starting from scratch. Most importantly, stay patient. A robust organic footprint builds over time and will help attract the majority of your traffic down the line.If you have questions about building domain authority or growing your tax and accounting practice, we’re here to help!
